Green Street Tavern

An excellent place to eat with regards to the food. I happened to eat here on a Sunday evening. Was seated right away, but had to wait for a waiter/waitress. He eventually came and took our took our order. Later, after waiting for some time for our check, found out that the waiter was moonlighting (doing homework/college). I appreciate a business that allows their employees to work on homework, which ultimately betters everyone. Landon (I believe that's the name of my waiter) needs to balance both worlds. Excellent atmosphere and I enjoyed all of the past photos and history in general. Thank you the decent experience.

6/10/23 Cindy is fantastic and fun to talk to. Highly recommend the raspberry ice tea. Also the steaks are great. This place has a great vibe about it. Very friendly and very attentive. Great ghost stories and would highly recommend you ask for him. As far as food had the fish tacos. Great flavor. Cold Night in Galena & stopped at Green Street Restaurant in the DeSoto Hotel on Green Street & Main Street. Atmosphere here is wonderful and was seated in front of an old working fireplace. COZY was the buzz word. Appetizer's were great here & quite a choice, oh, and priced right. One special was a chicken chili bowl? Sounded interesting so I ordered it. Delicious and served warm....not hot. It was great!!! Well Done Green Street!

You never know about a first visit to a restaurant and I was disappointed in this one soon after sitting down. The atmosphere is average, but it's the DeSoto Hotel so that helps. Lots of history. The staff was young and although nice, seemed to not be very attentive to our table. It was not busy and the staff seemed to stay in a group in the middle of the restaurant. All that can be fixed. The food on the other hand is average at best. In addition, two of the orders came with soup which we never got but we're still charged for. They do have some good micro brews, but our one order came flat and on the warm side. Galena has lots of restaurants of all kinds. I would strongly suggest you not stop at this one.

My wife and I have eaten here many times over the years. Unfortunately, our most recent visit (12/27/2023) was somewhat disappointing. The host (older fella) falls short of being a “gentleman”. He honestly needs to find a different job. He recommended the VFW as a place to wait, to the young family making a reservation ahead of us. Service was a mix. Our waitress was scarce but I give kudos to a gentlemen wearing an apron who noticed we looked like we needed something and left his post to come ask 👍🏼. Both my wife and I fell ill minutes after our meal - may have just have been a coincidence. We will try them again next year 🤞🏼.

GST is part of the Desoto House in downtown Galena and offers a cozy Tavern style atmosphere and great menu selection. They have specials every night of the week and we went on their all you can eat cod night which we ordered along with the salmon burger. The fish was good but more of a light batter that isn’t as crispy as I prefer it but was still tasty. Coleslaw and potato salad sides were a little bland and needed more seasoning but the salmon burger was very good. Garlic fries are a must! Pricing is fair and staff is nice. They do not take reservations and it came get full being part of the hotel, so come earlier or expect a wait on the weekend especially.
